Metr. Saba: Eucharist Reflects Unity, Does Not Create It
True unity at the Chalice depends on shared faith, not shared sentiment.
ENGLEWOOD, NJ — His Eminence Metr. Saba (Isper) has issued a theological reflection on intercommunion, emphasizing the central role of the Eucharist as the defining mystery of the Church. He explains that sacraments transcend human reasoning, serving as divine actions through which God imparts grace using material elements such as bread, water, and oil.
Focusing on Holy Communion, Metr. Saba stresses that participation in the Eucharist requires both reconciliation and unity among believers. The Gospel’s call to resolve conflicts before approaching the Chalice reflects the deeper reality that the faithful are united in Christ through the sacrament. Without harmony in faith and life, he warns, ecclesial unity becomes superficial rather than genuine.
He underscores this principle with the statement: “The fullness of the Church's unity is realized in the Eucharist within the Divine Liturgy. The Church is one Body with one Head, who is Christ. The unity of the Church is a unity in faith, not a unity of emotions, sentiments, or political positions of any kind. For this reason, the apostolic Churches insist on the necessity of sharing the same faith among those who approach the one chalice.”
Metr. Saba concludes by warning against practices that contradict the Church’s teaching, calling for seriousness and fidelity in preserving the integrity of the faith and the true meaning of Eucharistic unity.
