Russian Orthodox Church Provides Aid to Earthquake Victims
PETROPAVLOVSK — Following a powerful 8.7-magnitude earthquake in Kamchatka, the strongest since 1952, volunteers from the Petropavlovsk and Kamchatka Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church have stepped up to assist those affected.
A humanitarian warehouse at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is providing food and support, according to Daria Albu, head of the diocese’s Information Department.
The earthquake, which struck on Wednesday, prompted a tsunami warning and an emergency declaration in the North Kuril district of Sakhalin Province. Although tremors continued throughout the day, they began subsiding by evening, and the tsunami threat was lifted.
The cathedral remains open, with volunteers ready to help. Albu noted that anyone in need can visit the church for assistance as the community recovers from the seismic event.
