ST. PAUL, MN — Abortions in Minnesota rose for the third consecutive year, hitting a 34-year high in 2024, according to a report released by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) on Thursday. A total of 16,315 abortions were reported, a 61 percent increase since 2021, though the figure may omit procedures from one facility active during 2024. Planned Parenthood performed a record 10,638 abortions, while telehealth providers such as Just the Pill and Carafem accounted for 1,643 chemical abortions.
More than 3,000 procedures involved non-Minnesota residents, mostly from neighboring states. Abortions at 20 weeks gestation or later numbered 379, with two in the third trimester.
Pro-life advocates criticized Gov. Walz's legislative changes following the 2022 elections, saying that he and the legislature legalized abortion “for any reason and at any time,” weakened reporting requirements, and removed protections for born-alive infants. The pro-life advocates called for renewed protections for both mothers and unborn children.
Previously, the UOJ reported on the conviction of pro-life activist Matthew Connolly of St. Paul, Minnesota who was sentenced to 90 days in jail for silently praying near a Michigan abortion facility.
