Faith-Based Obria Steps In as Planned Parenthood Shutters Locations

AMES, IA — As Planned Parenthood shutters clinics nationwide, faith-based Obria Medical Clinic is stepping in to provide reproductive health care in affected communities. This year, roughly 50 Planned Parenthood locations closed, largely due to federal funding cuts under the Trump administration.

Obria, a Christian-affiliated network with 16 locations across five states, offers services similar to Planned Parenthood, including ultrasounds, pap smears, and sexually transmitted infection testing, but does not provide abortions, abortion referrals, or birth control. Executive Director Tamra Call emphasized the clinic’s readiness: “We want people to know: Planned Parenthood has closed, but there is still reproductive health care in Ames. We are ready to receive these women.”

Licensed nurse practitioners staff the Ames clinic, which also takes insurance and adheres to HIPAA standards, distinguishing it from many traditional pregnancy centers. Pro-life advocates see the closures as an opportunity to expand life-affirming care, filling gaps left by Planned Parenthood while maintaining a faith-based approach to reproductive health.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Planned Parenthood closed its remaining clinics in September 2025.
