VRBOVSKO, CROATIA — Authorities in the City of Vrbovsko have removed iron crosses from several old Orthodox cemeteries, prompting concern among members of the local Serbian community, which comprises more than 30 percent of the population. The removals reportedly occurred two weeks ago, with residents discovering the missing grave markers on February 13.
Mayor Dražen Mufić confirmed the intervention, stating that municipal workers removed what he described as “a dozen or so decayed remains” as part of regular maintenance. However, representatives of the Serbian minority dispute that claim. Deputy Mayor Milan Mamula said 72 crosses were removed from the cemetery in Ljubošina alone, with additional markers missing from nearby Trnova Poljana. He characterized the action as an affront to families and a violation of the dignity of the deceased.
Police in Croatia have opened an investigation. City officials maintain the removals were lawful, while minority representatives argue proper legal procedures were not followed.
