Metr. Nathanael Meets Pope Leo XIV in Vatican Audience

VATICAN CITY — His Eminence Metr. Nathanael was received in audience by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, together with Cardinal Blase Cupich. Their wide-ranging conversation addressed shared concerns over developments in the Middle East and the urgent need for prayer and peace to end ongoing violence.

The hierarchs also discussed strengthening collaboration between Orthodox and Catholic Christians—particularly in Chicago—and the importance of a clear, public Christian witness in an ever-changing world. A central theme of their pilgrimage included care for the natural environment, emphasizing that humanity, while uniquely entrusted within creation, remains part of it and responsible for its stewardship.

On March 2, Cardinal Cupich and Metr. Nathanael visited the Borgo Laudato Si’ center in Castel Gandolfo as part of an ecumenical pilgrimage marking the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea. Emphasizing Christian unity amid global conflict, Cardinal Cupich said Church leaders must highlight the moral costs of war and promote peace. Metr. Nathanael echoed the call, urging all people to seek common ground and draw closer to God.

In a lighter moment, Metr. Nathanael, a devoted Yankees fan, joked that he was pleased to be a White Sox supporter for the day in honor of the Pope.
