NEW YORK — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani hosted His Eminence Abp. Elpidophoros of America, Greek American leaders, and members of the Greek American community at Gracie Mansion on May 5, 2026, for a reception marking Greek Independence Day. The official holiday is celebrated on March 25.
The annual gathering at the mayoral residence brought together civic officials, diplomats, clergy, educators, and organizational leaders to commemorate the 205th anniversary of Greece’s independence movement beginning in 1821. The event also featured representatives from a wide range of Greek American institutions and community organizations.
Abp. Elpidophoros thanked Mayor Mamdani for his recognition of the national holiday and for his engagement with the Greek American community. He described Greek Independence Day as both a national and spiritual observance rooted in the Feast of the Annunciation and highlighted the ongoing role of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in serving the diaspora.
Mayor Mamdani, in turn, praised the contributions of Greek Americans to New York City and reflected on themes of civic life, community, and shared heritage.
Previously, the UOJ reported that President Trump welcomed Abp. Elpidophoros to the White House for Greek Independence Day.
