ARIZONA — An 11-year-old Orthodox Christian from Arizona is being recognized for raising hundreds of dollars for humanitarian relief after organizing a grassroots fundraiser at his local parish to benefit the International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) organization.
George decided he wanted to help people in need and set up a booth at his church to sell coupon books. At first, the effort appeared slow, but the young fundraiser remained patient. “I sat there and for the first 10 minutes we didn’t really get any sales. But then when a huge load of people walked in, and that’s when they started selling,” George said.
By the end of the fundraiser, George had collected more than $600, all of which he donated to IOCC. Explaining his decision, he said, “I decided on IOCC because I recognized them and I knew that they helped Orthodox Christians all over the world.” He added, “I thought that was a good idea because instead of the money going to me, I could help someone who needs it more.”
George said he already hopes to expand the project next year. “I’m most likely going to try and do the same thing next year, but this time I’ll have more time to plan for it, and hopefully make it bigger. And then I can help more people.” His contribution will support humanitarian aid efforts serving vulnerable communities worldwide.
