SPRINGFIELD, VA — The seminaries of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) marked the completion of the academic year with commencement exercises held throughout May, celebrating graduates preparing for service in the Church. His Beatitude Metr. Tikhon presided over ceremonies at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary and St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Theological Seminary, offering blessings and encouragement to graduates, their families, and seminary communities.

At St. Vladimir’s Seminary, the 87th Commencement Exercises were held on May 16. The Class of 2026 included eighteen graduates representing several Orthodox jurisdictions. Following a Divine Liturgy and a thanksgiving service, graduates, clergy, and faculty gathered for commencement ceremonies that featured addresses from class leaders and commencement speaker Charles Ajalat, a longtime supporter of Orthodox education and ministry. Students also recognized Liturgical Music instructor Zachariah Mandell with the St. Macrina Award for Excellence in Teaching and presented gifts to the seminary chapel community.

One week later, St. Tikhon’s Seminary celebrated its 84th annual commencement. Graduates heard a recorded address from Abp. Makarios of Kenya, who encouraged them to remain faithful and committed to Christ’s service. The seminary also honored clergy and staff members for distinguished service, while recognizing student achievement through awards and academic distinctions.

During his remarks at both institutions, Metr. Tikhon reflected on the opportunities and challenges facing Orthodox ministry in North America. He encouraged graduates to embrace their future responsibilities with humility, confidence, and reliance on Christ as they enter a Church that continues to experience growth and expanding pastoral needs.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Metr. Tikhon met with OCF leaders at the OCA Chancery.
