Romanian Orthodox Missions in Latin America Receive 50 New Faithful

QUITO, ECUADOR — Mission communities of the Romanian Orthodox Metropolia of the Americas across Latin America welcomed 50 new faithful into the Orthodox Church between Pascha and Pentecost, reflecting continued growth in regions where Orthodoxy has only recently established a presence.

Church leaders reported that the new faithful were received through Holy Baptism, Holy Chrismation, and participation in the sacramental life of the Church. An additional 80 catechumens are currently preparing for reception into Orthodoxy through formation programs that typically last at least six months. During this period, participants study Holy Scripture, Orthodox doctrine, liturgical worship, and the spiritual life of the Church while preparing for full membership.

Much of the growth has come from native Latin Americans who encountered Orthodoxy through local parish communities, worship services celebrated in their own languages, charitable outreach, and catechetical instruction. Clergy involved in the mission described the conversions as evidence of the Church's expanding witness throughout the region.

The largest number of receptions occurred in Chile, where 18 people entered the Church and 25 others remain in preparation. Ecuador reported 12 new faithful and 16 catechumens, while communities in Colombia received 10 people and continue instructing 28 others. In Venezuela, seven individuals were baptized and 11 remain in catechumenate. A mission in Cancún, Mexico, also welcomed a new member through Holy Chrismation.

As the Church celebrates Pentecost, clergy say the growth of Orthodox communities across Ecuador, Colombia, Chile, Venezuela, and Mexico demonstrates the continuing spread of the apostolic faith and the development of stable parish life throughout Latin America.
