ATHENS — U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle highlighted the importance of religious freedom and Orthodox Christian ties during a meeting with Patr. Theophilos III in Athens.
In a message shared publicly following the meeting, Guilfoyle said she was “deeply blessed” to meet the Patriarch of Jerusalem and emphasized the longstanding relationship between the United States and the Orthodox Christian world. She noted that the discussion reflected shared commitments rooted in faith and mutual respect.
Guilfoyle also referenced Patr. Theophilos’ decision to bestow an honor upon Donald Trump, noting that the Patriarch awarded the U.S. president the distinction of Great Bearer of the Cross of the Order of Cross-Bearers of the Holy Sepulchre. She described the recognition as a reflection of the close bonds between the United States and the Greek Orthodox Church.
The ambassador further reiterated Washington’s commitment to defending religious liberty around the world, a theme that has frequently appeared in U.S. diplomatic engagement with religious communities. Her remarks came as Orthodox leaders continue to engage international officials on issues affecting Christian communities in the Holy Land and beyond.
Previously, the UOJ reported that Ambassador Guilfoyle attended a Palm Sunday service in the Greek capital.
