Supreme Court to consider claims against Verkhovna Rada’s decision on Tomos

The Supreme Court will inform about the processing of the claims and report on new similar claims in the event of their submission to the Court

The Supreme Court of Ukraine will consider claims against the Verkhovna Rada to declare unlawful and overturn the decision of April 19, 2018 "On supporting the appeal of the President of Ukraine to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew for granting the Tomos on autocephaly to the Orthodox Church in Ukraine", repors the official FB page of the Supreme Court.

Two lawsuits – from the UOC religious community of the St. Nicholas Church of Berdiansk, Berdiansk eparchy, Zaporozhye region, and St. George’s Monastery of Gorodnitsa in the Zhitomir region – will be considered in a simplified lawsuit procedure, without calling the parties, on the basis of the available materials, within the time limits established in the Code of Administrative Justice of Ukraine, that is, no more than 60 days from the date of the opening of the proceedings. Proceedings for these cases are open on October 8 and 9.

The third claim – of the abbot of the Tithes (Desiatinny) Monastery Bishop Gedeon (Charon) of Makarov – is scheduled for consideration at the court hearing with the parties notified at 10:30 on November 27, 2018.

We recall that on April 17, 2018 President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko declared his intention to appeal to the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew with a request to provide the Tomos on autocephaly to the Church in Ukraine and urged the Verkhovna Rada to support his initiative as soon as possible. On April 19, parliamentarians supported the appeal of the President.
