Poroshenko: An agreement with Phanar entails independent Ukrainian Church
President Poroshenko and Patriarch Bartholomew
This is envisaged by the agreement on cooperation and interaction between Ukraine and the Patriarchate of Constantinople, which was signed by President Poroshenko and Patriarch Bartholomew, writes the President of Ukraine on his FB page.
“This is the Agreement on cooperation in the creation of an independent Orthodox Church in Ukraine, the Ecumenical Patriarch grants the Tomos, recognizing the independence of the Ukrainian Church, and presents it to the Primate elected at the Council,” Poroshenko explained.
As the UOJ reported, earlier the representative of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to the World Council of Churches, Archbishop Job (Getcha) of Telmessos stated that according to the decision of the Synod, all the hierarchs in Ukraine are de facto hierarchies of the Ecumenical Throne, and now they must wait for the directive of the Ecumenical Patriarchate regarding their future functioning and he will inform his subordinates when he deems it necessary. Patriarch Bartholomew will convene a unification Council in Ukraine when he “thinks the time has come”. He also said that the UOC ceased its existence on October 11, 2018.
On November 3, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and the Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew, following the meeting in Istanbul, signed an agreement on cooperation and interaction between Ukraine and the Patriarchate of Constantinople.
