On June 15, 2020, Abdulhamit Gül, Minister of Justice of Turkey, said that "the chains of Hagia Sophia should be broken” and it should be open to Muslim prayer, as Sultan Mohammed wished. He said this in an interview with the state agency Anadolu, the Turkish resource AA.com reports.
The Turkish minister noted, “Breaking the chains of Hagia Sophia by opening it for Muslim prayer is the desire of us all. That was the desire of the Sultan Mohammed."
The official reminded us that the litigation day is approaching on the opening of Hagia Sophia for worship, which will be considered by the Council of State.
He also said that Hagia Sophia had served as a mosque for 500 years, and then it was turned into a museum, adding that “the Council of State can make a decision under the law on this precedent or make another substantiated decision.”
Speaking about the status of the cathedral, he emphasized, “This is a matter that is the prerogative of the Republic of Turkey. This is a matter of sovereignty of the Republic of Turkey. ”
As reported by UOJ, earlier in Turkey a politician suggested painting the face of Seraphim on the dome of Hagia Sophia.
