On 25 November 2023, the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor, Metropolitan Onuphry addressed Ukrainians to never again allow such a tragedy, reports the press service of the UOC.

He noted that the famine of 1932-1933 was artificially created by the Soviet communist regime.

"We all know very well that the famine in the early 30s of the last century was not caused either by crop failure or other natural disasters – the famine was a purposeful mockery of the Ukrainian people by the Bolshevik godless power, which in such a misanthropic way wanted to humble people," said the Primate and recalled that soon the Bolsheviks began an active struggle with the Church.

"Mass persecutions and harassment, cruel repressions and murders of clergy and believers – all this is forever recorded in the black pages of the history of Genesis, and thousands of names of the then imprisoned and murdered believers – in heaven," His Beatitude Onuphry noted.

Praying for the victims of the Holodomor, the Primate urged "not to forget in our prayers today about our brothers and sisters – citizens of Ukraine, who are still experiencing the consequences of the humanitarian catastrophe due to Russian military aggression".

"I also wish all of us that despite all the hatred and aggression that are trying to confuse our souls today, we keep cordial peace, sanctifying our lives by fulfilling the commandments of the Lord, especially perfecting ourselves in active love for our neighbours, which is the main criterion of knowing a Christian in this world (John 13:35), for which we are called to be a light (Matthew 5:14)," His Beatitude Onuphry concluded.

Earlier, His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry commented on the UOC ban.
