Court leaves Archpriest Sergiy Chertylin in a pre-trial detention center

On April 8, 2024, the Kyiv Court of Appeal held a hearing regarding the appeal against the detention of Archpriest Sergiy Chertylin.

The defendant participated in the hearing via video link. The court left Fr. Sergiy in the pre-trial detention center without changing the decision of the court of first instance. The two months that the priest must spend in the pre-trial detention center count from the moment of his detention, March 12, thus the imprisonment should last until May 5, 2024.

"Fr. Sergiy does not back down, and this is the most important thing. He is in a cheerful mood. We must not lose faith, and all these trials should temper us," his lawyer Archpriest Nikita Chekman said after the court hearing.

As reported by the the UOJ, an open appeal by the the UOJ to international human rights organizations was sent in connection with the detention of journalists and human rights defenders by the SBU.
