MP from the Restoration of Ukraine Group, Artem Dmytruk, has registered bill No. 11436 in the Verkhovna Rada, proposing amendments to the article on the special regime of criminal proceedings under martial law.
This legislative initiative aims to stop the practice of automatically extending the detention of suspects without a court decision, which contradicts the Constitution of Ukraine.
Such actions are used to persecute Orthodox Christians: Metropolitan Arseniy, Orthodox journalists, and Fr. Sergiy Chertilin had their detention in pre-trial detention centers automatically extended.
The adoption of this initiative will align the norms of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine with the decision of the Constitutional Court, which ruled that part six of Article 615 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine is unconstitutional.
As reported by the UOJ, on July 26, 2024, UOJ Orthodox journalists, who are currently in pre-trial detention centers, were served a motion by O. Savenko, an investigator of the SBU in Kyiv and the Kyiv region, to extend their detention. Lawyers and suspects were also informed about the completion of the pre-trial investigation.
