Abp. Elpidophoros: Trump reminds me of Constantine the Great
President Trump welcomed the Greek community to the White House today in honor of Greek Independence Day.
The President stated that he was happy to have cancelled other plans for such an important event, noting the important contributions of Greek Americans to the history of the United States.
Archbishop Elpidophoros of the Greek Archdiocese (GOARCH) was given the opportunity to address both President Trump and the assembled delegates of the Greco-American community and had this to say:
"You remind me, Mr. President, of the great Roman Emperor, Constantine the Great..."
After explaining St. Constantine's vision of the cross before the Battle of Milvian Bridge, the Archbishop gifted President Trump a gold blessing cross encrusted with semi-precious stones.
Presenting the cross, Abp. Elpidophoros continued:
"Go with this and be victorious Mr. President. This Cross is an everlasting symbol of peace and an invincible trophy, a sign of divine strength and guidance. With this cross I pray you'll bring peace to the world and make America invincible."
On one hand, such a statement of support for Trump from the archbishop is wonderful to hear; on the other hand, it is rather astounding.
Abp. Elpidophoros has been an outspoken supporter of left-wing social causes for many years; President Joe Biden has credited Fr. Alex Karloutses and the powerful donor network of the Greek Archdiocese for his own electoral victories.
Are we seeing a shift in the priorities of the Greek Archdiocese, or has Byzantine intrigue forced the Phanar into a corner, from which there is only one exit?
Time will tell.
