ISTANBUL — The Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople convened on Friday, Aug. 29, for a session that covered a handful of issues, namely the active appeal of Met. Tychikos of Paphos of the Church of Cyprus, who is challenging the decision to depose him from his position that took place back in May.
According to a communication from the Patriarchate, the matter of His Eminence Met. Tychikos' appeal was discussed, and it was decided to summon him to appear before the Synod at its next session, which is scheduled for mid-October.
Previously, Abp. Georgios of Cyprus had shared his anticipation that a decision on the appeal would come by the end of September, expressing confidence that the Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople would "affirm the ruling" of the Church of Cyprus' Synod, which defrocked the metropolitan.
Other business that was discussed by the Synod today included the decision to "begin the process of revising the Constitutional Charter of the Church of Crete," an expression of support for Abp. Damianos of Sinai as the lawful and canonical archbishop and abbot of St. Catherine's Monastery, and two elections in the Archdiocese of Australia.
