Wonderworking Hawaiian Iveron Icon Visits East Coast Faithful
NEW ENGLAND — The Wonderworking and Myrrh-Streaming Hawaiian Iveron Icon of the Mother of God is making a pilgrimage along the East Coast this September, offering thousands of Orthodox Christians the chance to encounter one of the most beloved icons of modern times. Since first streaming fragrant myrrh in Hawaii, the icon has been a source of countless miracles, healings, and consolation, drawing the faithful into deeper devotion to the Theotokos and her Son.
The month-long journey began on August 30 at Saints Kiril and Metodij Orthodox Church in Cedar Grove, New Jersey, with the greeting of the holy icon followed by Great Vespers. The following morning, worshippers were joined by His Beatitude Archbishop Stefan of Macedonia for a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy before the icon. From there, the icon’s pilgrimage will extend to parishes, monasteries, and cathedrals across Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and New Jersey.
Along the way, Orthodox hierarchs including His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon of All America and Canada (OCA), and other clergy, will preside at services of prayer, Divine Liturgies, and Akathists offered before the icon. Faithful will have opportunities to venerate the holy icon, participate in services of intercession, and receive anointing with the miraculous myrrh.
The icon’s visit is especially significant for many communities that rarely have the opportunity to host such a sacred treasure. Its presence has been described by clergy and laity alike as a tangible experience of the mercy of Christ through His Most Pure Mother.
Among the highlights of the pilgrimage are:
- Washington, D.C. (Sept. 2): Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at St. Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral with both Archbishop Stefan and Metropolitan Tikhon presiding.
- Jordanville, NY (Sept. 9): Arrival at Holy Trinity Monastery for an early morning Divine Liturgy, followed by a visit to St. Tikhon’s Monastery in Pennsylvania.
- Howell, NJ (Sept. 11–12): Hierarchical Vigil and Divine Liturgy at St. Alexander Nevsky Orthodox Cathedral with His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas.
- New York City (Sept. 13–14): Services at the New Kursk Root Hermitage, Saints Kyril and Methody Cathedral, and St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Cathedral.
From August 30 through September 14, the faithful are encouraged to come and take part in this extraordinary pilgrimage. Organizers hope the visit will renew hearts, heal wounds, and strengthen devotion, reminding all of the abiding presence of Christ and His Mother in the life of the Church.
As the Hawaiian Iveron Icon continues its journey, Orthodox Christians across the East Coast are invited to approach in faith and reverence, trusting that the Theotokos continues to intercede for all who seek her maternal love and protection.
