U.S. House Amendment Targets Turkey’s Cyprus Occupation
WASHINGTON — A new amendment introduced by Representative Dan Goldman in the US House of Representatives calls for a thorough assessment of security risks posed by Turkey’s ongoing occupation of northern Cyprus.
The amendment mandates a detailed report within 180 days, to be submitted by the Secretary of Defense, in coordination with the Secretary of Homeland Security and the Director of National Intelligence, to key congressional committees.
The report will evaluate the occupation’s impact on the security of the US, Cyprus, Greece, Israel, and the UK, focusing on the presence of Foreign Terrorist Organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah in occupied areas. It will also review terrorist attacks facilitated in the region, assess vulnerabilities to US assets, and examine Turkey’s role in enabling terrorism, including through financial support and US arms.
Supported by Greek-American groups HALC and AHI, the amendment underscores growing concerns over regional stability.
