YONKERS, NY — A new edition of St. Gregory Palamas’ "The Triads" has been released as the inaugural entry in St. Vladimir's Seminary Press' new "Popular Patristics Series: Longer Works," offering readers the complete text alongside the original Greek.
Written in the 14th century to counter Barlaam the Calabrian’s criticisms of Athonite monastic practice, "The Triads" are widely considered the pinnacle of late Byzantine theology. The work synthesizes earlier patristic thought to articulate how humanity can truly know God, emphasizing that salvation transcends human limitation and involves a full transformation of body, soul, and mind.
The new translation, prepared by independent scholar Alexander R. Titus, aims to make Palamas’ major theological treatise accessible to a broader audience. Titus, who holds a doctorate in Church History from Princeton Theological Seminary, previously researched the influence of the Dionysian tradition on Palamas’ writings.
The Longer Works series expands the Popular Patristics imprint by publishing foundational texts too substantial for the original format, providing essential resources for students of Orthodox theology and Christian history.
Previously, UOJ reported that Fr. Seraphim Slobodskoy's seminal work "The Law of God" has been translated into Spanish as part of a limited-edition release.
