Countless Orthodox Lithuanians pray at miraculous icon for peace in Ukraine
On October 15, a large religious procession with the miraculous Surdegis Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos took place in Vilnius, during which the faithful prayed for peace in Ukraine. The UOJ was informed about this by the press service of the Vilna-Lithuanian diocese.
This is the first arrival of a particularly revered image from Kaunas to Vilnius in more than 20 years.
On the occasion of the arrival of the miraculous icon, believers from all over Lithuania came to the capital. The icon arrived from Kaunas to the Cathedral of the Theotokos, where it was encountered by many believers, after which the clergy performed the Divine Liturgy and a prayer service with special prayers for an end to the war in Ukraine.
Then the crowded procession moved along Didzhei Street through the Town Hall Square to the Holy Spirit Monastery. The icon will stay for a week – from 15 to 22 October – in the cathedral church of the Holy Spirit Monastery (10 Aushros Vartu str.).
The Surdegis Icon of the Mother of God is one of the main shrines of the Orthodox Church in Lithuania.
Its history is connected with the town of Surdegis, located 28 kilometers from Panevezys. On August 15, 1530, not far from the temple, an icon appeared on the spring, from which nearby residents took water. Currently, the holy image is located in the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Kaunas and shows miracles to this day.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that the Vilnius Diocese commented on the visit of Lithuanian politicians to the Phanar.
