St. Nikolai Mission Elevated to Full Parish Status in Bulgarian Diocese
A growing Orthodox mission in Ohio has reached a major milestone by becoming a full parish of the Bulgarian Diocese.
TOLEDO, OH — St. Nikolai Mission in Alliance, Ohio, has been elevated to full parish status within the Bulgarian Diocese, according to a communiqué issued by His Eminence Abp. Alexander on June 8.
In a letter addressed to Very Rev. Stephen Duesenberry, the community’s rector, Abp. Alexander announced that the mission had met the requirements necessary to become a parish. The decision recognizes the growth and stability of the congregation, which has developed from a mission community into a fully established church.
The Archbishop noted that the community of St. Nikolai had become fully self-supporting, maintained a complete cycle of liturgical services, and was served by a resident priest. Citing those accomplishments, he formally declared that St. Nikolai Mission would henceforth be known as St. Nikolai Church, a full parish of the Bulgarian Diocese.
The designation marks an important milestone for the Orthodox community. Parish status reflects a congregation’s ability to sustain its spiritual and administrative life while serving as a permanent presence within the diocese. Church leaders expressed gratitude for the efforts of Fr. Stephen Duesenberry, Popadia Sharon, and the faithful who helped build and support the parish over the years.
The announcement concluded with prayers for God’s continued blessings upon the clergy and parishioners of St. Nikolai Church and with wishes for many years of fruitful ministry.
Previously, the UOJ reported that registration opened for the OCA's 2026 Pastoral Retreat.
