Patr. Theophilos, Abp. Ieronymos Call for Unity During Athens Meeting
The Patriarch of Jerusalem and the Archbishop of Athens emphasized Orthodox unity and cooperation during a high-level meeting in Greece.
ATHENS — The Patr. of Jerusalem, Theophilos III, was formally welcomed at the Holy Archdiocese of Athens by Abp. Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece during an official visit that also includes planned meetings with Greek political leaders.
The meeting highlighted the role of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, with Abp. Ieronymos praising its “multifaceted peace ministry” and stressing the importance of unity among Orthodox Churches. He emphasized that “the local sister Orthodox Churches, in unison and agreement with the Holy Ecumenical Patriarchate . . . are called to serve and preserve the unity of the local Churches,” underscoring cooperation in addressing contemporary global challenges.
Abp. Ieronymos also referenced recent cooperation between the Church of Greece and the Greek government, describing a legislative initiative concerning clergy serving diaspora communities as a significant step in recognizing their pastoral role. He said such efforts strengthen Orthodox identity abroad and help maintain cultural and spiritual ties with Greece.
Patr. Theophilos expressed gratitude for the warm reception, calling the Church of Greece a vital support for Orthodoxy worldwide. He stated that it has been “the nurturer not only of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, but of all Orthodox Churches and Patriarchates,” and praised its historical contribution to theological leadership and missionary witness.
The Patriarch also thanked Abp. Ieronymos for continued support of the Holy Sepulchre and scholarship initiatives, noting assistance provided to clergy and educational efforts connected to the Patriarchate’s Arabic-speaking flock. He further commended the Archbishop’s leadership and commitment to ecclesial unity and responsibility.
