The gathering concluded with the establishment of a building committee for a new Orthodox church.

The Archbishop arrived Friday evening and was welcomed with traditional offerings of bread and salt, rose petals, and flowers. A moleben followed. On Saturday, he led a teaching session on the Last Judgment, using an illustrated broadside that will remain in the church as an educational resource, continuing a tradition of instructional posters once used throughout Alaska’s Orthodox churches.

A nearly three-hour question-and-answer session addressed spiritual life, family, and parish challenges. Abp. Alexei emphasized teaching children the fundamentals of Orthodox practice, including making the Sign of the Cross, praying, venerating icons, and behaving reverently in church. He also discussed the spiritual consequences of scandalizing others and leading them away from the Church.

During Saturday evening’s Vigil, the Archbishop spoke about St. Peter the Aleut, the Alaska Native Orthodox Christian who was martyred rather than renounce his faith. On Sunday, he celebrated the Divine Liturgy and preached about the Cross of Christ and the sacrifices required by Christian discipleship.
