**NEW YORK —** A dispute between Abp. Elpidophoros of America and leaders of the Order of Saint Andrew the Apostle, Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, [reportedly arose](https://www.thenationalherald.com/tensions-erupt-between-archbishop-elpidophoros-and-archons-leadership/) during an October 15 meeting at the New York Hilton. The disagreement concerned the Order’s relationship with the Archbishop, the administration of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew Foundation, and the handling of its funds. Abp. Elpidophoros, Grand Protopresbyter Alexander Karloutsos, and National Commander Anthony J. Limberakis were approached for comment but had not responded by publication.

According to accounts of the meeting, Abp. Elpidophoros objected that the Order had excluded him from certain activities and fundraising initiatives, despite provisions in its bylaws for the participation of the Patriarchate’s Exarch. He reportedly said he would withdraw from most Order activities, while continuing to perform the ceremonies conferring ecclesiastical titles, or offikia, on new Archons. The report also described a disagreement over Limberakis’ tenure as National Commander: the Archbishop reportedly advocated limiting the position to two two-year terms, while Limberakis said he intended to serve another four years after 28 years in the role.

The Foundation’s finances were another subject of discussion. Its assets totaled approximately $38.5 million as of September 30, 2026, including cash, investments, and pledges receivable. The Foundation reportedly transferred $617,000 to the Ecumenical Patriarchate for repairs requested by Patr. Bartholomew. Questions were also raised about a five-year restriction on access to much of the Foundation’s funds and Karloutsos’ reported role in establishing that arrangement. Established in 2019, the Foundation supports the religious, educational, and charitable activities of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

A separate incident reportedly occurred at the Order’s October 17 dinner honoring Cardinal Timothy Dolan with the Athenagoras Human Rights Award. Limberakis reportedly began closing the event before Abp. Elpidophoros had delivered his remarks or offered the closing prayer, prompting attendees to call for the Archbishop. Questions were also raised about how travel expenses for Order officials and their spouses are covered, with an Archon reportedly having brought concerns about the matter to Abp. Elpidophoros more than three years ago. The accounts of the meetings and the allegations have not been publicly confirmed by the individuals involved.

Previously, the [UOJ reported](https://uoj.news/news/abp-elpidophoros-votes-in-first-american-election/) that Abp. Elpidophoros voted in his first American election.
