**BELGRADE, SERBIA —** Serbia has become the first Balkan country to have an [openly gay person](https://minorityaze.org/en/1964-serbia-is-the-first-balkan-country-to-have-an-openly-gay-president) serve as president after Ana Brnabić assumed the role of acting president on September 28 following the resignation of Aleksandar Vučić.

Brnabić, who had been serving as Speaker of the Serbian Parliament, is a member of the Serbian Progressive Party. She was appointed Serbia’s prime minister in 2017, becoming the country’s first woman and first openly lesbian prime minister. Her current tenure as acting president is expected to be temporary, with a presidential election required within 90 days of Vučić’s resignation.

Brnabić has spoken openly about her sexual orientation but has previously said she did not want to be defined by it as Serbia’s “gay prime minister.” She also said that she did not intend to prioritize LGBT legal reforms while other government priorities required attention. LGBTQ activists have subsequently criticized her for what they regard as insufficient advocacy for LGBT equality.

At the same time, Brnabić became the first Serbian prime minister to participate in a Pride event when she joined the Belgrade Pride march in September 2017\. She has a same-sex partner and a child.

Vučić resigned on September 27, ending his second presidential term early as Serbia prepares for an October 25 parliamentary election. The country must also hold a presidential election, with the first round expected by the end of 2026.

Previously, the [UOJ reported](https://uoj.news/news/trump-administration-revokes-rule-requiring-lgbt-affirming-foster-placements/) that the Trump administration revoked a rule requiring LGBT-affirming foster placements.
