**BALAMAND, LEBANON —** The Holy Synod of Antioch concluded its [sixteenth regular session](https://www.antiochian.org/regulararticle/2979) on October 24, 2026, after five days of deliberations on regional instability, the future of Christian communities in the Middle East, clergy welfare, and the pastoral challenges facing the Church worldwide. Patr. John X of Antioch and All the East presided over the gathering at the Patriarchal Monastery of Our Lady of Balamand.

The hierarchs emphasized the need to protect the Christian presence in Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Iraq, and Jordan amid continuing wars, economic hardship, emigration, and political uncertainty. Meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on October 21, Patr. John reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to peace and stability, describing Lebanon as a symbol of Christian presence in the Levant.

During the session, the Holy Synod elected Archimandrite Alexi Nassour as an auxiliary bishop to the Patriarch for the United Arab Emirates, with the title of Bp. of Urfa. The hierarchs also examined clergy livelihoods, youth participation, priestly and monastic vocations, and the effects of digital media on church life and pastoral care.

The Synod expressed concern about deteriorating conditions in southern Lebanon and pledged support for affected communities. Following the deadly terrorist attack on St. George Orthodox Church in Karak, Jordan, the hierarchs prayed for the victims, offered condolences to their families, and sought healing for the wounded.

In its concluding discussions, the Synod called for greater cooperation between religious and political leaders, stronger national unity, and a shared commitment to human dignity. The gathering concluded with a patriarchal Divine Liturgy at the Dormition Church of Balamand Monastery on October 25.
