**NEW YORK —** The Archon Diakonia Ministry on Women in Orthodoxy [will host](https://archons.org/archon-webinar-to-focus-on-women-in-the-orthodox-tradition/) a webinar featuring Ashley M. Purpura, Ph.D., author of "Women in the Orthodox Tradition: Feminism, Theology, and Equality," on November 8.

The webinar, offered with the blessing of Abp. Elpidophoros of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, will examine women’s roles, voices, and actions in the Orthodox Church and will include a presentation by Purpura followed by a question-and-answer session. Purpura is an associate professor of religious studies at Purdue University whose research focuses on Christian thought and practice, gender, theology, and contemporary Orthodox Christianity.

In a 2025 interview about her book, Purpura said she seeks to “highlight the theological importance of affirming the full and equal humanity of women” and to “rethink traditions and practices that might undermine that affirmation.” She also said she hopes readers will [find inspiration](https://undpress.nd.edu/blog/2025/04/23/an-interview-with-ashley-marie-purpura-author-of-women-in-the-orthodox-tradition/) in faith traditions “to more consistently advocate for the full and equal humanity of all who are marginalized.”

Discussing her research, Purpura said secular feminist theorists had been “very helpful to think along with while evaluating gender equality in my own tradition.” She described the book as an effort to bring feminist theological perspectives into engagement with Orthodox tradition and said she hopes readers who disagree with her conclusions will nevertheless see “potential in this type of engagement.”

The webinar will take place from 7 to 8 p.m. EST. The Archon ministry encouraged those interested in women, religion, feminist theology, and Orthodox Christianity to participate.

Previously, the [UOJ reported](https://uoj.news/news/abp-elpidophoros-to-invest-47-new-archons-in-new-york/) that Abp. Elpidophoros was set to invest 47 new Archons in New York.
