**SLIVEN, BULGARIA —** The Holy Metropolis of Sliven has [issued a statement](https://bg-patriarshia.bg/news/stanovishte-na-slivenskata-sveta-mitropolia) criticizing the public promotion of “Krishna Consciousness” in Pomorie, Aheloy, and other communities within its territory, while emphasizing that its position is directed at the teachings rather than people who hold different religious beliefs.

The statement, dated October 3, stresses the historical importance of Pomorie as a Christian city with longstanding Orthodox traditions. The Metropolis said the Krishna Consciousness movement belongs to the Gaudiya-Vaishnava tradition within Hindu religious culture and therefore should not be presented as another expression of Christianity.

The Metropolis also called on Orthodox Christians to distinguish respect for individuals from acceptance of religious teachings. It emphasized that, according to Orthodox belief, Christ is the Son of God and Savior of the world, quoting His words in the Gospel of John: “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”

At the same time, the statement acknowledged Bulgaria’s constitutional guarantee of freedom of conscience and religion. It said religious freedom should not be understood as requiring indifference toward religious influence, particularly concerning children and families. The Metropolis urged parents and institutions to be attentive when religious teachings are presented through cultural events, music, yoga, festivals, entertainment, or charitable activities.

The Sliven Metropolis also expressed support for actions by the mayor of Pomorie when undertaken within his legal authority to protect children, families, and the city’s historical and cultural character. It concluded by calling on Orthodox Christians to actively preserve their faith and pass it to younger generations.
