# Fr. Andrew Louth Receives Moldavian Cross for Contribution to Patristic Studies

**IAȘI, ROMANIA —** Orthodox theologian Fr. Andrew Louth, Professor Emeritus at Durham University, has received the [Moldavian Cross](https://basilica.ro/en/andrew-louth-moldavian-cross-patristic-theology-iasi/), the highest distinction of the Metropolis of Moldavia and Bukovina, in recognition of his contribution to patristic theology and its study.

Metr. Teofan of Moldavia and Bukovina presented the award during the international symposium “The Patristic Tradition Today,” held at the Metropolitan Museum in Iași. This year’s gathering focused on “The Reception of the Church Fathers in Modern Thought,” examining the influence of patristic writings on modern theology, philosophy, and cultural discourse.

Around 20 scholars specializing in patristics, theology, and philosophy participated in the symposium. Among the special guests were Fr. John Behr, Lewis Ayres, and Fr. Bogdan G. Bucur. The presentation of the Moldavian Cross to Fr. Andrew was one of the highlights of this year’s event.

Fr. Andrew is a Fellow of the British Academy and has played a significant role in contemporary patristic studies. He has served as editor of "Sobornost" and has been involved with academic series focused on early Christianity, including Oxford Early Christian Studies and Early Christian Writings.

His scholarly work has examined subjects including the life and theology of St. Gregory Palamas, the secular and humanist traditions in late Byzantine theology, and the theological understanding of love in both Eastern and Western Christian traditions.

Ordained to the priesthood in 2003, Fr. Andrew is also known to Romanian readers through translations of several of his works. Among them are "Denys the Areopagite: An Introduction," "Discerning the Mystery: An Essay on the Nature of Theology," "The Origins of the Christian Mystical Tradition: From Plato to Denys," and "St John Damascene: Tradition and Originality in Byzantine Theology."

The Moldavian Cross recognizes Fr. Andrew’s decades of scholarship and his contribution to the study and promotion of the writings and theology of the Church Fathers.
