**MT. TAYGETOS, GREECE —** Greek military engineers and local mountaineering volunteers have reinforced a historic Orthodox chapel dedicated to Prophet Elijah near the summit of Mt. Taygetos, completing essential repairs ahead of the winter season.

The work took place on October 21 at an elevation of 2,407 meters (7,897 feet), where severe snowfall and storms threaten the small stone sanctuary. Personnel from the Greek General Staff’s Directorate for Construction and Natural Disaster Response (DIKAFKA) collaborated with mountaineers from Mani, Corinth, and Gytheio, as well as members of the Mountaineering Club of Kalamata.

Military engineers installed seven additional wooden beams to reinforce the roof and added six supporting columns secured with metal clamps. They also repaired the entrance door, restored damaged roof sections, and sealed gaps between the stones and roof tiles. Military helicopters transported the necessary materials and equipment to the remote summit.

Beyond the structural repairs, participants collected ten large bags of rubbish from the surrounding area, addressing pollution left behind by visitors and animals during the summer.

Deputy Minister of National Defence Thanasis Davakis thanked philanthropist Thanasis Martinos for helping fund construction materials and praised the military personnel and volunteers for their work. He urged visitors to close the chapel door after entering, remove their rubbish, and respect the natural environment.

The chapel holds particular importance for Greek Army Aviation, which venerates Prophet Elijah as its patron saint. Its preservation reflects cooperation between the armed forces and local communities to protect Greece’s Orthodox heritage and mountain landscape.
