**LONE BUTTE, BC —** Holy Transfiguration Hermitage, a [small monastic community](https://orthodoxcanada.ca/Lone%5FButte%5FBC%5FHoly%5FTransfiguration%5FHermitage%5F1977) of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) in Canada, is seeking a buyer for its current property as the monks prepare to relocate from their remote wilderness setting near Lone Butte, British Columbia.

Founded in 1978 by Archimandrite Gregory (Papazian), the hermitage has moved several times during its history. It has been situated in the rugged Cariboo region of central British Columbia for the past 11 years. The community currently consists of three monks.

The need to relocate is largely due to the health and age of Fr. Gregory, who is approaching 80 and has developed several age-related health problems. His condition makes it increasingly difficult for him to remain in the hermitage’s isolated location, prompting the community to seek a less remote setting where their elder can receive more appropriate care.

The monks emphasized that they are not seeking donations to fund the move. Instead, proceeds from the sale of their current property are expected to cover the costs of relocation. Their immediate challenge is finding a suitable buyer for the hermitage.

The monks are appealing to clergy and faithful across the various Orthodox jurisdictions to consider purchasing the property. They noted that the site could continue to serve as a monastery or potentially be used as a private residence, given its size and layout.

A particular concern for the community is preserving the building’s chapel, which is integrated into the structure. The monks’ foremost wish is for the chapel to remain an Orthodox place of worship after the property changes hands.

The hermitage is currently listed for CA$549,000\. The sale would allow the monks to move to a more accessible location while offering a prospective buyer the opportunity to maintain the property’s Orthodox use.
