**ISTANBUL —** As reported by [UOJ-Ukraine](https://spzh.eu/ua/news/96863-patriarkh-varfolomij-meta-dialohu-z-rkts-prichashchatisja-z-odnijeji-chashi.html), Patr. Bartholomew has said that the [ultimate goal](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dOztVK8FmQ) of dialogue between the Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church is to restore sacramental communion, including the joint celebration of the Divine Liturgy and reception of the Eucharist from one Chalice. He made the remarks in a documentary produced by Greek television broadcaster ERT to mark the 35th anniversary of his patriarchate.

The Patriarch said representatives of Constantinople and the Vatican are currently discussing theological disagreements including the Filioque and papal infallibility. He expressed hope that, through the grace of the Holy Spirit, the discussions would eventually lead to what he called the unity of the first millennium.

"We are currently discussing the Filioque and the infallibility of the Pope and hope that over the years, primarily by the grace of the Holy Spirit, we will arrive at where we are striving: to the desired unity, to the common Chalice, as my predecessor of blessed memory, Patr. Athenagoras, said **—** so that we can serve the liturgy together and receive communion from one Holy Chalice," he said.

Addressing criticism of inter-Christian dialogue, Patr. Bartholomew argued that its results and timing belong to God's Providence rather than human judgment. He cited Christ's prayer "that they all may be one" in defending continued discussions among divided Christians.

He also said the Orthodox Church, which he described as continuing the tradition of the undivided Church, had influenced the Roman Catholic Church to a certain extent on the question of catholicity.

The documentary recalled earlier milestones in relations between Constantinople and Rome, including Patr. Bartholomew's attendance at the 2013 enthronement of Pope Francis, the first such participation by an Orthodox primate since 1054\. In November 2025, Patr. Bartholomew and Pope Leo XIV also participated in an ecumenical meeting in Iznik, marking the 1,700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council, and signed a declaration pledging to continue dialogue toward restoring full communion.

Previously, the [UOJ reported](https://uoj.news/news/istanbul-celebration-marks-35-years-since-patr-bartholomews-election/) that an Istanbul celebration marked 35 years since Patr. Bartholomew's election.
