**MT. ATHOS —** Bulgarian Patr. Daniel led an All-Night Vigil and Divine Liturgy at Zografou Monastery on October 23–24, 2026, commemorating the [750th anniversary](https://orthodoxtimes.com/patriarch-of-bulgaria-presides-over-all-night-vigil-honoring-the-26-martyrs-of-zografou-monastery/) of the martyrdom of 26 monks and laymen who, according to Orthodox tradition, chose death by fire rather than renounce their faith. The celebrations brought together four other Bulgarian hierarchs: Metrs. Seraphim of Nevrokop and Grigoriy of Vratsa, and Bps. Gerasim of Melnik and Kliment of Levski. Monks from the Cell of St. Nicholas of Myra, known as Burazeri, and the St. Naum of Ohrid Choir sang during the services.

Following the Divine Liturgy, the monastery’s abbot, Archimandrite Gabriel, welcomed the Patriarch and reflected on the martyrs’ witness. Comparing ancient persecution with the [treatment of believers](https://orthochristian.com/181068.html) under socialist-era authorities, he said, “In these modern times, believers were accused of being class enemies and were punished as such, and some of them were even granted a martyr’s end.” Gabriel also emphasized that Christian unity cannot be imposed by political authority: “Unity is, and can only be, a grace-filled action within the grace-filled fold of the Church, because the Church is one, just as her Creator is one.”

Patr. Daniel thanked the monastery’s brotherhood for its hospitality and reflected on the spiritual significance of the anniversary. “The grace of the Holy Spirit gathered us to celebrate the memory of the holy 26 Zografou Martyrs. . . . Their memory shines with Christ’s light, which enlightens every man coming into the world,” he said.

Patr. Daniel also discussed the monastery’s revered icon of the Mother of God known as the Foretelling, or Prodromitissa, which tradition says warned the monks of the approaching persecution. He described the 26 martyrs — 22 monks and four laymen — as having chosen to burn rather than extinguish the love for God in their hearts. As gifts, Gabriel presented the Patriarch with a painting of the monastery, while Daniel gave the abbot a cross depicting St. John of Rila and an icon of St. Clement of Ohrid.

The anniversary celebrations concluded with a festive meal and prayers of thanksgiving. During his time on Mt. Athos, Patr. Daniel has also visited the Protaton, Iveron, and Vatopedi monasteries, as well as the Burazeri Cell. The commemoration honored a tradition of steadfast faith that remains central to Zografou's spiritual identity.
