Abp. Daniel Announces New Center for Orthodox Formation
A new diocesan institute aims to expand Orthodox education by preparing deacons, training catechists, and fostering lifelong learning across the Midwest.
CHICAGO — The Diocese of the Midwest of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) has launched the St. John of Chicago Pastoral Institute, a new educational ministry designed to strengthen clergy formation, catechetical training, and lifelong learning throughout the diocese. The initiative was announced by Abp. Daniel, who described the institute as a significant investment in the future of Orthodox Christian education and ministry.
The new institute builds upon the work of the St. Macrina Orthodox Institute, creating a unified diocesan structure for faith formation and pastoral education. Abp. Daniel expressed gratitude to Archpriest Elijah Mueller for his leadership of the previous program and its contributions to educational efforts within the diocese.
Initially, the institute will offer two primary programs: a Diaconal Training Track for men preparing for service in the Holy Diaconate and a Catechist Training Track for those called to teach the Orthodox faith in parish communities. Plans are also underway to develop adult enrichment courses covering theology, Scripture, Church history, liturgical life, spirituality, and related subjects.
The diocese has appointed Fr. Daniel Greeson as the institute’s founding director. Current students of the St. Macrina Orthodox Institute will continue their studies without interruption, while applications are now being accepted for the 2026–2027 academic year. The previously announced July conference has been canceled.
