On 10 December 2024, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, commenting on the events in Syria, said he was struck by the speed with which changes occurred. The words of the cardinal were quoted by Vatican News: "The regime, which seemed strong, was swept away in a short period of time."

He noted that the situation is developing rapidly, and it is too early to predict the outcome; we must see how events unfold. Secretary of State Parolin stated that some statements have already been made regarding respect for Christian communities, so there is hope that "the future of respect for all is possible". The cardinal also urged those coming to power to strive to create an open and just regime that will respect the rights of all, including Christian communities.

Parolin concluded his speech with a call for prudence and tolerance during this challenging period.

As reported by the UOJ, the Vatican Secretary of State also discussed what is needed for a ceasefire in Ukraine.
