Patr. Theophilos Hails Ceasefire as Hope for Lasting Peace in Holy Land

JERUSALEM — Patr. Theophilos III of Jerusalem expressed hope that the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas could serve as a step toward a lasting and comprehensive peace, during the annual Christmas and New Year reception hosted by Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

Speaking before representatives of all Christian communities in the Holy Land, the Patriarch said the Churches are praying that the ceasefire will lead to “a conclusive and permanent peace,” helping to heal the wounds of the October 7 attacks and the war in Gaza. He emphasized the continued commitment of Christian institutions to ensuring humanitarian aid reaches those most in need, particularly children, women, the elderly, and the sick.

Patr. Theophilos highlighted the treatment of children from Gaza suffering from cancer at Jerusalem’s Augusta Victoria Hospital, stressing the need for uninterrupted medical care. He also warned of rising hostility and violence in the West Bank, Jerusalem, and northern Israel, calling for renewed efforts toward coexistence and security. President Herzog, in turn, voiced concern over the emigration of young Christian families and underscored the importance of ensuring their sense of belonging and safety in Israel.

Previously, the UOJ reported that the Patriarch of Jerusalem hailed the Gaza ceasefire and called for Palestinian statehood.
