Greek Orthodox Chaplain Brings Anti-Trafficking Message to Illinois Parish
A parish visit in Aurora highlighted the Church’s expanding efforts to confront human trafficking through education, prevention, and survivor support.
AURORA, IL — The Rev. Protopresbyter Dr. Peter J. Spiro, Chief Chaplain of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and Director of the FREEDOM Ministry of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, visited St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church for a program focused on raising awareness of human trafficking and supporting survivors.
As reported by the Orthodox Observer, he celebrated the Divine Liturgy on Sunday and delivered the homily, urging the faithful to recognize the dignity of every person and to respond actively to suffering and exploitation. He emphasized the Church’s responsibility to remain attentive to both visible and hidden forms of abuse within local communities.
Following the service, the parish hosted a luncheon attended by more than 250 people, where Fr. Peter presented the mission of the FREEDOM Ministry, addressing both sex and labor trafficking as well as emerging online forms of exploitation. He also provided practical guidance for clergy and parishioners on prevention, identification, and response.
Fr. Peter additionally highlighted the work of the ARISTEVI Foundation, which offers trauma-informed support services for survivors, including education, vocational assistance, and spiritual care, while stressing the importance of cooperation between churches, law enforcement, and community organizations.
