ROCOR bishops gather in Munich for a week-long centenary assembly marked by wide participation, major events, and pending ecclesiastical questions, such as the possible canonization of Fr. Seraphim Rose.

MUNICH, GERMANY — The Bishops’ Assembly of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR) opened on April 29 at the St. Elizabeth Convent — named after St. Elizabeth the New Martyr and Grand Duchess of Russia — in Buchendorf, a suburb of Munich. The Council of Bishops have convened for a week-long program, marking the 100th anniversary of the German Diocese of ROCOR.

Among those in attendance are Metr. Nicholas of Eastern America and New York; Metr. Mark of Berlin and Germany; Abp. Kirill of San Francisco and Western America; Abp. Gabriel of Montreal and Canada; Abp. John of Caracas and South America; Bp. Irenei of London and Western Europe; Bp. Theodosy of Manhattan; Bp. Luke of Syracuse; Bp. James of Sonora; Bp. Job of Stuttgart; Bp. Michael of Boston; Bp. Peter of Seattle; Bp. Spyridon of Toronto; and Abp. Tikhon of Ruza of the Moscow Patriarchate’s German Diocese, along with other bishops, clergy, and guests.

The bishops are expected to discuss ongoing church matters and participate in liturgical and anniversary services throughout the assembly. Among those questions pending is whether there will be an announcement of the result of the commission for the investigation into the sanctity of Fr. Seraphim Rose.

Following the synod’s conclusion, the German Diocese will host an international conference titled “Heritage and Vocation” at the St. Job of Pochaev Monastery in Munich, alongside additional exhibitions and academic events commemorating the centenary.

UOJ-Germany (UOJ-DEU) is reporting from the scene.

Previously, the UOJ reported that ROCOR announced its annual Fort Ross pilgrimage for Memorial Day.
