St. Tikhon’s Monastery to Host Summer Iconography Workshop
A summer workshop at St. Tikhon’s blends traditional iconography with contemporary technique in an immersive liturgical setting.
SOUTH CANAAN, PA — St. Tikhon’s Monastery will host a five-day intensive iconography workshop from July 26 through Aug. 1, 2026, focusing on egg tempera techniques under the direction of Fr. Paul Stetsenko.
Organized under the aegis of the St. Theodore the Studite Art Studio, the program is open to participants of all skill levels who are over the age of 18. Instruction will center on painting the head of Christ, with beginners working from prepared drawings and advanced students developing compositions based on historical prototypes.
The course will combine lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on practice, covering techniques such as paint preparation, glazing, scumbling, and structured color design. Participants will also engage in the full icon-writing process, from gesso preparation to final layering, while having the opportunity to attend daily liturgical services at the monastery.
