Non-Binary Job Category Scrapped in Canada’s Labour Reports

OTTAWA, ONTARIO — Canada’s national statistics agency has abandoned efforts to include a “non-binary” gender category in its monthly Labour Force Survey reports, citing the group’s small population. According to a December 2025 briefing, less than 0.25 percent of Canadians identify as transgender or non-binary, making separate reporting impractical and raising confidentiality concerns.

A “plus” symbol was briefly added to the survey’s gender tables, but non-binary respondents were ultimately aggregated into the traditional male and female categories. The Labour Force Survey collects data from roughly 65,000 households each month to provide a comprehensive picture of the Canadian labor market.

Critics have noted a contrast between this decision and the federal government’s policies. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s 2025 budget earmarks $54.6 million for LGBT initiatives, gender equality programs, and “pride” safety, prompting concerns from groups like Campaign Life Coalition that activist priorities are being funded over struggling families’ basic needs.
