ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT — On January 17, 2026, Patr. of Alexandria and All Africa, Theodore II, presided over the Divine Liturgy at the Church of St. Anthony the Great in Shatby, Alexandria, commemorating the feast of the Father and Teacher of the Desert. He was accompanied by Bp. Damaskinos of Mareotis, Patriarchal Exarch of Alexandria.

In his homily, Patr. Theodore reflected on the encounter between St. Anthony and St. Paul of Thebes, highlighting St. Anthony’s obedience, trust in God, and perseverance despite physical hardship. He emphasized that spiritual growth requires trial, patience, and humility, and noted that divine providence sustains those who dedicate themselves entirely to God. The Patriarch also recalled the miraculous events surrounding St. Paul’s repose and burial by lions, illustrating the harmony restored through righteousness.

The celebration concluded with a procession of St. Anthony’s icon in the church courtyard and the traditional cutting of the New Year’s Vasilopita at the parish center, bringing together clergy, faithful, and parishioners in joy and fellowship.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Patr. Theodore II spoke of the Egyptian president's "love and concern" for the Orthodox Church.
