WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday passed H.R. 6945, the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act, legislation clarifying that states may use Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) block grants to fund pro-life pregnancy resource centers. The bill, introduced by Rep. Michelle Fischbach (R-MN) and co-sponsored by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), aims to prevent states from excluding such centers from TANF funding.
Speaking on the House floor, Smith said the measure protects pregnancy centers from discrimination and affirms their role in providing free medical, material, and support services to women and families. He criticized prior federal efforts to restrict access to TANF funds and urged the Senate to act swiftly.
Smith highlighted personal testimonies from women who credited pregnancy centers with helping them choose life and rebuild their futures, arguing the legislation would allow centers to expand services nationwide.
