DNIPRO, UKRAINE — On January 26, 2026, Ukrainian MP Georgiy Mazurashu sharply criticized the ongoing detention of Metr. Arseniy, head of the Sviatohirsk Lavra, saying the hierarch is being “slowly killed” in the pre-trial detention center (SIZO). Mazurashu challenged the grounds for the criminal case against Metr. Arseniy, calling the charges against him for allegedly “surrendering positions” to be unfounded.

The lawmaker highlighted the Metropolitan’s serious health problems and argued that continued incarceration under such conditions is “a disgrace for our country,” urging authorities to consider alternatives such as house arrest while presenting clear evidence.

Mazurashu’s comments reflect growing concern among some Ukrainian political figures and civil society about the treatment of religious leaders accused under wartime and security-related charges. Public debate continues over balancing state security with humane treatment of detainees, particularly those with significant health issues. An interview with Mazurashu regarding Metr. Arseniy's treatment can be found here

Previously, the UOJ reported that the Dnipro court extended Metr. Arseniy's detention for 60 days, until March 22, 2026.
