NEW YORK — Abp. Elpidophoros of America has urged the Primate and hierarchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) to begin commemorating Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew during divine services, saying this step is necessary for Constantinople to offer meaningful assistance.
Speaking on the church situation in Ukraine, the Archbishop said some UOC hierarchs are seeking help from the Ecumenical Patriarchate while simultaneously questioning its authority. “How can you ask someone for help if you do not recognize his authority to help you?” he asked, stressing that acceptance of the Patriarch’s jurisdiction must come first.
Archbishop Elpidophoros called on the UOC to halt public criticism of Patriarch Bartholomew, warning that challenging Constantinople’s prerogatives undermines prospects for dialogue. He emphasized that commemorating the Patriarch would demonstrate recognition of his authority and right to assist, adding that appeals for help otherwise “have no foundation and are not convincing.”
Previously, the UOJ reported that Abp. Elpidophoros called faithful to compassion and charity during Nativity.
