NEW YORK — With the blessing of Metr. Nicholas of Eastern America and New York, First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, the Synodal editorial team has published a financial status report on the restoration of the Synodal Residence in New York, home to the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God “of the Sign.”

In an August 2024 address, His Eminence Bp. Nicholas underscored the historic and spiritual significance of the building, noting that it has long housed the Church’s miraculous icon and served as the site of episcopal councils, saintly glorifications, and the enthronement of metropolitans. He warned that the structure has fallen into severe disrepair and requires extensive renovation.

According to the report, the Synod-approved, phased restoration plan carries an estimated cost of $15 million. Reserve funds have been used to meet expenses and avoid late payments. As 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of the icon’s arrival in the United States, fundraising and restoration work are expected to continue.

Previously, the UOJ reported that the Kursk Root Icon had visited southern France.
