The Church of Cyprus is preparing to convene the Holy Synod to advance the election process for the Metropolitan of Paphos under its newly revised Charter.

NICOSIA, CYPRUS — The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus is expected to reconvene on Tuesday, May 26, to review and potentially approve the list of candidates for the vacant Metropolitan Throne of Paphos, with the possibility of proceeding directly to an election, according to statements made by Abp. Georgios of Cyprus following the conclusion of a recent three-day Synod session.

The Archbishop explained that the revised Charter of the Church, which was unanimously approved, now allows for the Holy Synod to elect metropolitans under its provisions. He described the overall process as calm and constructive, noting that the main reform concerns the method of selecting metropolitans, while other changes focus on updating administrative structures and procedures.

He further stated that the Synod has already agreed to announce the election process for the new Metropolitan of Paphos. Candidates must meet specific requirements, including at least ten years of satisfactory service, a minimum age of 35, and a degree in theology. The required service period may include time spent as a deacon, priest, or monk.

Abp. Georgios also confirmed that any amendments to the Charter require a two-thirds majority vote. Addressing relations with the Ecumenical Patriarchate, he stated, "We are an integral part of the One Holy Catholic Orthodox Church. We recognize the Ecumenical Patriarch as the First among equals." He added that the dispute with Metr. Tychikos is considered a settled matter with no further discussion expected.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Abp. Georgios issued an ultimatum to Metr. Tychikos.
