Serbia Marks Statehood Day in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Statehood Day of the Republic of Serbia was celebrated at the residence of the Serbian ambassador, bringing together diplomats, U.S. officials, members of Congress, and representatives of the Serbian Orthodox Church, including Bp. Irinej of Washington–New York and Eastern America. The reception highlighted tradition, diplomacy, and ongoing cooperation between Belgrade and Washington.
Serbia’s Ambassador to the United States, Dragan Šutanovac, emphasized that Sretenje symbolizes statehood and offers an opportunity to strengthen bilateral relations. He described 2026 as a year for renewed friendship and expanded cooperation in security, economy, and technology.
U.S. Congressman Pat Harrigan of North Carolina noted the historical ties and stressed opportunities for collaboration in high technology, artificial intelligence, manufacturing, and regional stability. Senior U.S. administration officials, including Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Daniel J. Lawton, also attended, underscoring the importance of continued dialogue and partnership.
Previously, the UOJ reported that a parish is in distress as their Serbian priest faces risk of deportation.
